GREAT EXPECTATIONS

I’m the bones of the sea that became the coral reef
One day I’ll have nothing more to give but I can still become beauty
I’m the hope and the wish of the kid who lives by “ignorance is bliss”
But I don’t crush, I only lust after giving someone more than a kiss

I measure time in memories
And I am haunted by obscenities
My whole life is a compilation of shoulder shrugs and “I don’t knows”
But in the end, I want a wife to love and children to see when I come home

But my dreams create a mask over my face and sorrow
How am I supposed to weep and wallow
If there’s no hole through which to breathe
‘Cause I refuse to be a man behind a mask
But I’d rather be a mask with no man behind me

How am I supposed to be breathe with such great expectations
You grabbed the bar and set it high
And now you’re forced to wonder why I can’t fulfill your great expectations

The Giving Tree was my childhood’s favorite caveat
Now look at me, I’ll say I’m good, but my words really don’t say a lot
Oh, The Places You’ll Go, it seemed to me, I had been force-read
But I’ll only go to the places I have chosen for myself

I don’t enjoy the force of gale winds
They only stir this up and shuffle me within
The weight and wind of words are nothing but air from your lungs
But there’s still a strain on my chest from “I’ll always be here for you, son”

But these words create a mask over my face and sorrow
How am I supposed to weep and wallow
If there’s no hole through which to breathe
‘Cause I refuse to be a man behind a mask
But I’d rather be a mask with no man behind me

How am I supposed to be breathe with such great expectations
You grabbed the bar and set it high
And now you’re forced to wonder why I can’t fulfill your great expectations

But I can speak too
Although flustered, I know I know how to argue too
And once you blink and start to think of the home I was born of
Then and only then can I say and truly mean I’ve had enough

‘Cause how am I supposed to be breathe with such great expectations
You grabbed the bar and set it high
And now you’re forced to wonder why I can’t fulfill your great expectations
You grabbed the bar and set it high
And now you’re forced to wonder why
Great expectations
Great expectations
Great expectations
Great expectations
